“Now I Get It!”
These are the words every teacher lives to hear. When Linda Furman began writing original songs to teach math to her 4th graders 30 years ago, she did indeed hear her students exclaim that they now understood their math lessons. As Linda moved from the classroom to the Title-I program to work with struggling math students, she used her original songs and strategies to give non-mathematical thinkers a way to understand math in everyday terms. These songs helped to ward off the math anxiety that plagued so many of her students.
Now retired, Linda continues to write poems and song parodies. Strong emotions have always been the catalyst for her poetry, whether they be generated by dedication to her students, love of family and friends, celebration of joyous events or the endurance of difficult times.
